Strategy to regain control over your finances

1. Set a realistic, personalized budget.

A budget is an excellent tool that helps you take control of your finances from this moment onward. Before you face any consequences of recent financial struggles, setting a budget will prevent you from digging yourself into a deeper hole. Consider using a budget calculator to factor in different expenses and create a plan for starting to save and repay your existing debts.


2. Determine whether an additional source of income is needed.

Once you set your budget, determine whether your current income is sufficient to meet your needs and keep you on track. If you need additional funds to cover debts and work toward your main financial goals, it may be time to consider a second job or a side hustle. Evaluate your total weekly, monthly, and yearly income with and without an additional income source to see how quickly extra money could help you repay debts or build savings. 3. Consolidate debt, if necessary.

If you are dealing with large credit card balances or other debts that generate significant interest, consolidation may be a better alternative than allowing those accounts to accumulate further. Consider combining these debts into a personal loan with a much lower interest rate. You may also prefer transferring balances to a credit card offering a promotional 0% APR period, which gives you time to repay without interest. 6. Avoid impulsive purchases and save for large expenses.

While rebuilding your finances, large purchases should be kept to a minimum. But if you do spend on expensive items, consider gradually saving for them instead of making purchases that significantly impact your monthly budget or relying on a credit card.


7. Practice good credit hygiene.

A low credit score can put you in a difficult financial position even after balancing your budget and building savings. This number does not only affect mortgage rates and credit card applications; it can also impact your ability to rent an apartment or lead to additional costs from utility providers and other service companies requiring deposits. Your credit score will not change overnight, but consistent financial responsibility can improve it and increase your access to credit and lower interest rates. Keep credit card balances low, pay your bills on time, keep old accounts open, and limit new credit applications. Eventually, your score will begin to rise.
